Can I Take My Child on Holiday During Term Time?

Short answer: Yes, but only in exceptional circumstances.

Headteachers can approve a leave of absence request if there’s a genuine family emergency (e.g., a funeral). They are not allowed to approve leave for cheaper holidays.

If you take your child on holiday without permission, you may be breaking the law and could receive a fine. Always talk to the head teacher before booking anything. Those are your parenting responsibilities in action.

Religious Absence – What Parents Need to Know

Schools must authorise absence for religious observance if the day is set apart by your religious body.

For example, Yom Kippur, Eid, or Diwali. Authorised absence means it won’t count against attendance records.

Give as much notice as possible. The school may contact your religious body to verify. This is not a loophole — it’s genuine religious observance.
